When this project first came to us in 2025, the homeowner had one simple request: help us figure out what to do with our backyard. There was no clear vision—just a space full of challenges and untapped potential. Navigating City of Raleigh Requirements and Inspections
One of the biggest hurdles on this project was a sewer easement that ran through more than half of the property. This significantly limited what could be built and where. We worked closely with the City of Raleigh over several months, going back and forth through inspections, revisions, and approvals to fully understand the constraints and opportunities.
After multiple iterations of landscape design and careful planning, we successfully passed inspection and were finally able to move forward—confident that everything we built would meet city requirements and stand the test of time.
A Full-Service Outdoor Renovation
This wasn’t just a backyard upgrade—it was a full-scale renovation that touched nearly every service we offer.
Hardscape Design & Installation
We installed a stunning Techo-Bloc 25×12 patio with an Onyx Black border, creating a clean, modern outdoor living space perfect for entertaining or relaxing.
Tree Removal
Over 15 trees were removed from the property. This not only opened up the space for better usability but also allowed more sunlight in and significantly improved drainage conditions.
Grading & Drainage Solutions
Drainage was a major concern, and we addressed it head-on. Our team installed multiple catch basins and routed several downspouts underground to the city’s drain basin. With precise grading throughout the property, we ensured water flows properly—eliminating future issues and protecting the investment.
Retaining Walls
We installed multiple retaining walls using Fay Block with a smooth finish. These structures helped manage elevation changes while adding a polished, cohesive look to the landscape.
Outdoor Lighting
To enhance both safety and ambiance, we installed a total of 10 outdoor lights, including 4 path lights and 6 wall lights on the steps. The result is a beautifully lit space that can be enjoyed day or night.
Sod Installation
The entire property—front, side, and backyard—was regraded, topped with fresh soil, and sodded with Zenith Zoysia. This premium sod was selected for its low-maintenance qualities and lush, high-end appearance, giving the homeowner a yard that looks great year-round with minimal upkeep.
Artificial Turf & Putting Green
One of the standout features of this project is the large artificial turf area, complete with a custom putting green. It’s a fun, functional addition that both kids and adults can enjoy.
Landscape Design & Plant Installation
We brought the entire space to life with a thoughtfully designed landscaping plan, including:
- Tea olives, gardenias, and hydrangeas for fragrance and color
- Encore azaleas and knockout roses for long-lasting blooms
- Boxwoods, abelias, and shrubs for structure and layering
- Occidentals, lemon cypress, and a fringe tree for visual interest
- Ferns and hostas for soft texture in shaded areas
- Creeping phlox for ground coverage
- Pine straw and mulch for a clean, finished look
- River rock and boulders for natural accents
We also installed stone steps connecting the side yard to the backyard, improving accessibility and tying the entire design together.
