When our Durham customer reached out, the property was dealing with significant drainage issues throughout the yard. Standing water and runoff were affecting usable space and overall enjoyment of the outdoor area. Our goal was to solve the water problems first, then transform the space into a functional and beautiful backyard living area.
Solving the Drainage Issues First
Proper drainage is always the foundation of a successful landscape installation. In this project, we installed three strategically placed catch basins around the property to collect excess water and redirect it away from problem areas. From there, we ran drainage pipe all the way to the wooded area at the back of the property for safe discharge.
To ensure everything functioned correctly long-term, we used our Topcon grade laser system to verify proper slope throughout the entire run. This step is especially important in flatter areas where even small grading errors can lead to future water issues. By maintaining consistent downhill flow, we ensured the system would perform properly during heavy rain events.
The result is a clean, efficient drainage system that protects the yard, patio areas, and surrounding landscape.
Outdoor Living Space Installation
Once the drainage issues were resolved, we shifted focus to creating a high-end outdoor living space designed for both relaxation and entertainment.
We installed a 14×14 paver patio using Techo-Bloc Champlain Grey Slate pavers with an Onyx Black border stone for a clean, modern contrast. The patio layout was designed to maximize usable space while blending naturally into the surrounding landscape.
At the center of the design, we built a Weston stone fire pit, creating a natural gathering point for evenings outdoors, entertaining guests, or family time around the fire.
To add structure and definition to the space, we also installed a small retaining wall using Belgard Diamond Pro Sheffield block, helping to frame the patio and manage subtle grade changes in the yard.
Landscape Finishing Touches
To complete the transformation, we incorporated thoughtful landscape design elements throughout the property, including the installation of Compadre Zoysia sod in the backyard. This premium grass provides a dense, soft, and durable lawn that performs well in the North Carolina climate and complements the new hardscape features beautifully.
Around the common areas, we added designer brown mulch to create a clean, polished look while also improving moisture retention and helping to suppress weeds.
A Complete Backyard Transformation
This project was a great example of how proper planning and installation can completely change the function and feel of a property. By addressing drainage first, then building out a thoughtful outdoor living space, we were able to turn a problem yard into a usable, low-maintenance, and visually appealing outdoor environment. From grading and drainage to hardscape and sod installation, every detail was installed with long-term performance in mind.
