The Erosion Problem
The property had a noticeable slope, with stormwater moving through a low area along the edge of the yard. Continued water flow had created erosion in the ditch and was gradually washing away soil.

The next part of the solution was creating a dry creek bed through the existing drainage area.
Instead of allowing water to continue cutting directly through exposed soil, we constructed a defined channel using Tennessee River rock, larger boulders, and natural stone.
The rock helps slow the movement of water as it travels through the ditch, reducing the force of runoff against the soil. The larger boulders also help define the channel and give the drainage feature a natural appearance that fits into the surrounding landscape.
A dry creek bed can be an especially useful landscape feature when properly designed around an existing drainage pattern. Rather than trying to fight the natural movement of water, the goal is to create a more controlled path for runoff.
Adding Plants to Blend the Drainage Area into the Landscape
Once the drainage feature and retaining wall were in place, the project was finished with landscaping elements that helped the new features blend naturally into the property.
Ferns were incorporated around the rock and wooded areas, adding greenery and softening the hardscape. The combination of plants, boulders, and Tennessee River rock gives the drainage area a more natural appearance rather than making it look like a purely functional drainage channel.
